Meaden’s functional soda-fired porcelain work displays both practicality and extravagance. She is drawn to work that is lavish in ornamentation and use of materials. Everything she makes is meant to be used, though Punch Bowl looks both elaborate and vulnerable. Her work is thrown on the wheel and then altered by cutting and stretching. The repetitive patterns are drawn on the surface, then the leather-hard clay is incised with an Exacto knife. The incisions are filled with black slip, and additional colors and glazes are added after bisque firing.

Lorna Meaden has been a full-time studio potter in Durango, Colorado, for almost thirty years. She has intermittently moved to other places for education, artist residencies, and as much international travel as possible. Meaden received her MFA in ceramics from Ohio University in 2005. She has completed several artist residencies; and has been visiting faculty at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico; Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville; and Fort Lewis College in Durango. Her most fulfilling work has been teaching and learning abroad, including time spent in Jamaica, Nicaragua, Nepal, Italy, and Bali.
